LEARN TO THINK PHOTOGRAPHY!

The workshops are for those who seek an injection of inspiration to photography and want to learn more.

A full day (10-12 hours) photoworkshop is going to get you tired, but hopefully tired with a smile! We cover many kilometres on both mainroads and small mountainroads. I talk about the basics of photography, which naturally produces discussions along the way with many questions and answers. Every route has roughly scheduled stops for shooting, sometimes closeby the jeep and sometimes we walk for an hour or two....

Technical basics is essential to operate a manual camera and to control any given situation for taking a photograph. I talk about understanding and the impact of shutterspeeds, aperture, depth of field, iso sensitivity, ambient and reflected light. These are the very basics of general photography and will be addressed throughout the day in all the shooting that we do. Furthermore, I talk about pros & cons of photographic hardware; camerabodies and lenses in particular, but also helpful accessories and choosing the right tools for various assignments or line of interest.

Should there be interest in the group to dig deeper in the discussions then we spend time to go through how to work with a technical camera with movements. Learning the impact of shifting the lens or digitalback both horizontally and vertically. Controlling focal plane with lenstilt or swing and perspective control with tilt/swing of the DB.

For digital capture I bring an Alpa SWA • Schneider optics • Leaf digital back and for analogue capture we use a Fuji GX 680 III • Fujinon optics • Velvia. All participants may try this out in the field to get a feeling for working slowly, deliberately and thoughtfully.

The technical stuff is important to understand, but my priority is to teach how to 'think photography'. What to look for in a scene, how to see and read the light, what to include and exclude in your composition. This is more difficult to study in books. A workshop, out in nature, is the perfect place to get handson advice of how to improve your decisions to create stunning images. An artistic eye will often see alternatives at any given scene and make full use of graphical groupings of forms, lines, patterns and light.

Thinking photography is making you aware of possibilities. To see the images with your eyes, take the right decisions and then...

just do it.

Send me an 'expression of interest' to participate in a workshop.
